Organization:American Geosciences Institute (AGI)
Summary:The goal of this activity is to have students analyze Earth science informational text using a systems-thinking approach. First, students review (or are introduced to) each of the spheres that comprise the Earth system (i.e. atmosphere, biosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere). Next, students read a selected Earth science informational text article. Then, they determine which parts of the article describe or are related to each of the Earth's different spheres. They record their findings on a Systems Thinking Analysis diagram. After this, students participate in a collaborative conversation with a group in which they share their ideas. The group then creates a poster that portrays the systems and system interactions described in the article. Finally, students share their poster with the class.
Subjects: earth science literacy principles; geoscience literacy; informational text; teachers resources
