Summary:Geothermal energy is produced by converting Earth's inner heat into electricity or for heating. The generation of geothermal energy does not require fossil fuels and is a clean source of energy. Wells are drilled to access hot water at depth within Earth's crust. Heating occurs naturally because Earth's temperature rises with depth below the surface. The sources of this heat are energy left over from the formation of the planet and the decay of radioactive elements in Earth's deep interior. Links to four activities about heat transfer and energy efficiency are included.
